Historical Background

In 1970 the governing Board of Freemasonry in South Australia gave approval for an approach to be made to lodges to gain the feelings of brethren regarding the formation of a Masonic Club of S.A..  Late in October 1970 a meeting was called to discuss the formation of such a club. 153 brethren attended and a steering committee was formed.

Several properties were considered as sites, including Kingston Terrace, North Adelaide, and Wakefield Street, Kent Town.  It was also agreed that the basement of the headquarters of Freemasonry in S.A. (at 254 North Terrace) and property at Dernancourt should be considered. The Dernancourt premises proved to be not feasible.  Application was made to the governing Board for the use of the basement at North Terrace, but this was rejected.

In February 1972 the local council approved plans to build a residential club in Hauteville Terrace, Eastwood, behind the old ETSA building. At this time application was made to the Licensing Court for a liquor license.

The estimated overall cost of the proposed development at Eastwood was about $600,000.  The clubhouse was to be a two story building, costing $350,000 furnished. The ground floor was to contain a member’s bar and lounge, committee room and reception area with a 250 person dining room with kitchen and liquor facilities.  The motel was to be 20 luxury units at a total cost of $160,000.  Money had been raised through debentures, unsecured notes, subscriptions and other means and the land, which contained house properties, was purchased for $73,000.

During the period of financial negotiations, two of the houses were converted into temporary club rooms and many enjoyable functions were held.  Other houses were let. Sadly, finance proved to be a major hurdle to overcome.  The houses were sold and the project was eventually cancelled.
