History

Although the earliest manuscripts available are dated in the 1780's, it is known that the Degree was being worked in the 1740's. Originally restricted to Installed Masters of a Craft Lodge, this qualification was dropped in 1834, when the ritual was revised.

In South Australia the first Chapter, South Australian Chapter No 853 E.C., was constituted in 1854, attached to the United Tradesmen's Lodge No.583 E.C.. The Supreme Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of South Australia formed in 1886, consequent on the United Tradesmen's Lodge transferring its allegiance to the Grand Lodge of South Australia in 1884.

The South Australian Chapter changed its name to Adelaide Chapter No 1, S.A.C., in 1927.

For additional information see the book "Royal Arch Masonry in South Australia and the Northern Territory 1854-1986" edited by M.E. Comp. ADR Marlow (1986, Adelaide)

Uniqueness

The layout of the furniture and the Officers of a Chapter and their placement are completely different from the basic format of a Craft Lodge.  This lends a uniqueness to Royal Arch Chapters that is not found elsewhere in Freemasonry. Instead of a single principal officer (the Worshipful Master), three Principal Officers rule the Chapter conjointly.

Teachings

The Holy Royal Arch of Jerusalem ceremony tells, in a dramatic form, how the words of a Master Mason were recovered. Spiritually, it teaches us to consider the various aspects of our individually acknowledged Supreme Being, and our relationship with Him.

Basis

Royal Arch Masonry is described as the Foundation and Keystone of the whole Masonic structure. It is acknowledged as an integral part of "pure antient Masonry".  A Master Mason's knowledge is considered incomplete without his participation in the Royal Arch.

Membership

Qualification for membership of the Royal Arch Chapter is that you be an active Master Mason, at least two years after becoming a Master Mason.
